I can definitely see why they would let Victorino walk. But for them to try to move Lee is pretty telling. Supposedly they got a pretty good prospect back for Pence. Nats could be the crown jewel of the division for the next 5 years.
Welker a possesion WR's just like all Caucasian WR's so when you can no longer do that, you gotta sit the bench or learn how to kick FGs or Punts -STICKTHEVICKTIM

This is pretty much the end of their 5 Year Plan. Starting in '07, they decided to gamble with guys who had a 5 year shelf life like Rollins, Utley, Ibanez, Halladay, and Lee to an extent. To their credit, it paid off considering they won it all in '08 and made it back in '09. But they essentially have no farm system and guys like Dom Brown and Mayberry Jr. never panned out.

They need to trade some of these older pieces now for prospects.

Yup. I really don't bedgrudge them. They took their shot, and have been ravaged by age and injuries in the last year. Spending away your problems is not as easy as the Yanks make it seem. Not flipping these players puts them at significant risk of becoming then Mets v 2.0.

Another issue that is overlooked is that Pat "All I do is create beastmode teams" Gillick created that Phillies team that won in 08.
Gillick also created the World Champion Blue Jays, and also made the Orioles of the mid 90's into a playoff contender.

New GM Ruben Amaro was handed the keys to an already running corvette. And really has just spent in the wrong places.
And their coach, Charlie Manuel is not the X's and O's manager it takes to manage a team like he has now. His hands are pretty much tied.

This is what happens when you let a good power hitting roster get old with no changes until it's too late.

Yeah. I think you or someone else mentioned the Gillick thing a few years ago.

Even then, this was Murphy's Law in all its glory. Last year's team SHOULD have won it all. Baseball is maddening. I've finally learned to chill out over the regular season because the playoffs have become a complete crap shoot, and investing all my time in 162 games = fan deflation in October.

The other underrated thing here, and I figured this would be the case, is the additional wild card spot has changed the economy of baseball. By definition, there are about six or so more serious buyers than usual at the deadline. If you don't think your team has a shot at the second wild card spot, you know where you stand and you pretty much have to make a move.

Pretty much. Unlike other sports, 162 games is very hard to sustain the optimum level of play for a team. And I don't see it changning any time soon with the extra wild card spot.

Pretty much. Amaro's biggest problem is that he sacrificed the future of the organization & their farm system to sign big name guys like Halladay and Lee. People forget that they didn't even win with Halladay and Lee in '08.

All excellent points! People in NY are ready to jump off a bridge if the Yanks drop 3 straight. Though I listen to sports radio as background with regards to my day, you can't help but want to smack these callers. Yanks rolled off 11 in a row before the all-star break but you get people that want to make a panic move right now. Great point about being so emotionally invested over 162. I get upset over trends, not that we dropped 2 against 3 over the Sawx. I remember the Yanks losing to the Angels in '05, Tigers in '06, Indians in '07-- All teams the Yanks should of beaten on paper.

You know what it feels like when you watch a world beater team all year get eliminated by the great Kenny fcking Rogers? Maddening i'll tell you.

They held onto a lot of these guys too long but it's tough to argue with the results they had during the run. Now they will have to get very creative to fill out their roster the next few years. That Howard contract is flat out atrocious.

Also Travis Snider better hit!!! Can't say I'm very impressed with the Pirates deadline as I was expecting big things this season. Qualls is absolute garbage, but I liked the Gaby Sanchez trade. Impartial on Snider right now.
