Well, a 3-4 is enharently weak against the run. But only for a couple yards. You should give up less big plays with a 34 than a 43 on teh run. You can bring the line in, and try to get pressure with Dline men. Then spread out the LBs. To cover the out side, and the middle. You can try to send a run blitz occasionaly. And with a 34, I would use the hit stick sparingly. You don't want any broken tackles. You can also try puting the safteys on the line of scrimage. It will reduce your deep pass coverage though. Or, you could try running the 3-4 OVER. Where a LB sits in a position that looks like a 4-3 D. But then you will probably have a LB being blocked by an OL on the out side.

My suggestion would be if you have a good sense that the run is coming... to use a 4-3. I run into I-Form or Strong I HB Blast 75%! of the time on the first play of the game. If you come out in a 3-4 and blocks set up... GOOD NIGHT!

3-4 is a great pressure defense mix in with zone and zone blitz shades. Against inside runners like Jamal Lewis, though, it sucks.

just like the other poster said 3-4 is weak against in the inside run,its great for outside runs, try running cover 3-4 zone, bring the d-line in and make them crash outwards then bring the lbs in,one of the inside lb's should make the tackle if its a outside run.just do different shifts and crashes to confuse em.

Edit: you can also just SEARCH for topics on the 3-4 and find alot of information, search before you ask a question and if you cant find a answer then ask ,im not trying to be mean or anything just incase you didnt know

Run the 3-4 Cover 2 if you are certain a run is coming. The play normally gets blown up in the backfield.

I usually run middle linebacker storm blitz and crash the line inside. Sometimes I'll put the Weak side middle linebacker in a QB spy when I feel a pass might be coming. This play works great, even against the pass.

This is how I stop the run (I don't give up rushing yards to easily) 50 yards if you can studda..if you can't ur looking in the 25-30 range

Shift the D-Line to the strong side
    Shift LBs In

Just blitz either MLB and he shoots the gaps

When I used to run the 3-4 (before they forced linemen to move back), I'd routinely shift the defensive line in either direction (depending on my blitz package) then move the NT back to cover the center... It covered the G and C on one side, and placed the DE on the OT's outside shoulder.

The MLB behind the tightened DE/NT was protected and could flow from sideline to sideline on outside runs and the uncovered G typically blocks the unprotected MLB across from him, leaving the unblocked MLB to clean up. If the protected MLB does get blocked, it leaves the NT single blocked, allowing him to break off blocks to hit the ball carrier in the hole when the offense ran at the bubble.

In those rare times when the middle is blocked well... The OLB's on both sides are usually there to hit the ball carrier before he can gain 3 yards.

It pretty much killed the possibility of the inside run...

As far as outside runs, the spacing of the linebackers and the protected MLB does a great job of occupying blockers and creating even pursuit without giving up a cutback...

Of course... You can only use the alignment in 2005 if you maintain control of the NT. Otherwise, he will let the center snap the ball without anyone head up on him.

this is completely wrong, i stop the run without any problems using the 3-4 and i don't move anybody manually before the snap.

one real good 3-4 run stopper is the crash blitz. shift the line to the strong side (flip the play if the offense comes out in a flipped play), crash the line and coverage audible left to bring everybody up.

i take control of the backside end and use the R1 button to get inside.

presto, a 3-4 sure fire run stopper.

edit: i didn't know this thread was in the ncaa section, i replied to it in the madden section.
