Sign people to 7 year contracts, then keep resigning them so they never get the fat backend of the contract. Keep replacing older players (especially when they start regressing) with younger players. That's pretty much it.

Another key is to look for players who you can develop...pick up lower overall OVR's with good physical stats (SPD, TCK, etc) for less cash then play 'em and try to raise their AWR

there was in a thing of 05, don't know if it's still in '06 where you could trade players with signing bonuses, take a huge cap and then clear your cap penalties and the cost of team prestige.

it's cheap, but if you've been working on a franchise for 5 seasons and don't want to be forced to sell them, it can be the only option.

other than that, follow the suggestions for going with young players.
7 year contracts for great draft picks or my favorite 3 year contracts and take a chance on restricted free agency.

This is really cheesey, but can be the only way to save a franchise in cap trouble without trading/releasing players.

-Target a good player with 1-2 years left on his contract.
-Change his position to something were he is rated low.
-Sign him to 7 year contract with low pay.
-Change him back to the original position.

    Flame away, I expect it.

Ive noticed that this year, the players ask for similiar amounts of money if you do that^^^.

I rember in 04 when I was the Pats, and I didn't want to trade anyone, so I just created all my players. I had like 7" 400lb DL and LBs. 7" recievers...ect. all 99s.
Back then you could change the attributes of created players, so I would change them to a really low OVR, and resign them for like 350K 7yrs.. I went bankruped, and became the Los Angles Comets.

haha, that franchise was so fun

its in My Team and then you hit O on ps2 or whatever it tells you to, to clear them, 1 or 2 bars of prestige so youd better get to the playoffs. i used to do the signing bonus thing and renew it after year 6 but it got so tiring having to do it year after year after year. so now i dont even mess with the numbers, i sign them at whatever it pops up with and i havent had too much difficulty.

in RFA other teams seem only to want to get at your corners, olb's mlb's, mostly defensive players. barely any ss's or fs's that ive noticed, and anything 84 and below ive noticed is pretty safe to give them the lowest amount of money. i just signed 6 guys 80-84 at $990 grand a piece ;x if they were on another team i would have picked them up if it didnt cost a bunch money and a draft pick.

I can still sign them cheaper, but their morale goes down noticably after you change them back.

I use a somewhat different philosophy for my teams. I rarely re-sign anyone -- I'll either trade someone when they hit their last year of the contract or allow them to leave the following season as a Free Agent. I make sure that I draft potential replacements a year before they are needed so that I keep my rookie exposure to a minimum. I don't want to pay anyone big bucks -- there are always cheaper alternatives. I don't sign Free Agents -- I rarely have any roster space at that point (a side effect of player turnover).

But the beauty of franchise is that everyone can use a different model or methodology and still be successful.....
