The West Coast is generally understood to be the ball-control passing offense originated by Bill Walsh when he was the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1970s under Paul Brown and developed fully by Walsh's 49er teams of the 80s.

It is predicated on short, timed precision passes such as the slant and the curl, the quick out. It is the opposite of the deep passing game developed by Sid Gillman of the 60s Chargers, Ernie Zampese of the 70s Rams and 90s Cowboys, Martz's 90s Rams.

Famous proponents of the West Coast offense who continue using it today include Seattle's Mike Holmgren (who also brought it to the 90s Packers) Tampa Bay's Jon Gruden who utilized at Philly and Oakland before going to the Bucs ,the Denver Broncos' Mike Shanahan, the Eagles' Andy Reid.
