Do you guys know what tri-tip is?

I was hungry, so I went into this grille here and asked that waitress if they had tri tip. She had no idea what I was talking about. Do you guys know what it is?

LOL , uhh yeah ... But if you want to ask for a really unknown cut of meat , ask for a shell steak ... its the best part of da cow if you ask me, but not many butchers know where it is ... Sounds like you got the trainee waitress... Not sure how you could work at a grill and not know tri-tip.

Eh, I guess you don't buy a lot of beef at the market... There is almost always tri-tip in the beef section. To me the cut always looks like a long thin roast .... its not exactly t-bone steak shaped , but more like a roll of cookie dough ... I marinate and grill it and it has a great texture and flavor. It's reasonable priced too. I went and bought some steaks Monday, it's crazy time for beef in the markets , the price per pound was $10.99 - $14.99 depending on the cut , whereas tri-tip was $5.99 per pound ... but... I was really in the mood for the t-bone so I coughed up the extra bucks... I don't know where you guys live, but here in California you can score some really good beef at Mexican markets, for some reason they aren't into steaks so usually you can get nice cuts for 1.99 to 3.99 per pound ... but if you are into pig snout and cow belly , well then ... be prepared to pay extra.

Taylor pork roll (thick cut), fried egg, and cheddar on a toasted bagel = breakfast of champions.

    Agree, venison is overrated.

Further, if you aren't eating your steaks rare, you dont know what you're missing!

Best steak Ive had recently - Syracuse: Stop by dinosaur bbq and get the ribeye (with the butter AND bourbon sauce) and order it rare. Supurb.

    San Diegoites (or visitors) -

Any good places to get a steak that I shouldn't miss before I leave? (Close to harbor island is a plus)

    Thanks.

Yeah its expensive to buy in stores if you can even find it , most of the health food stores have it but it's around $20 for a 8 oz. steak... Hopefully it will become more popular and the price will drop some...

What people dont understand is that certain cuts of meat are more or less confined to certain areas and people outside those areas have never heard of them. As in my porksteak example... My GFs dad was born in Norway where theyre a staple (as they are here in the StLouis area).......He now lives in NewYork and cannot find them and butchers look at him like hes nuts when he tries to explain the cut to them. We actually ship them up to him occassionally. Its just a certain cut of pork butt but im told as close as chicago theres no such thing................ And i grill and shop for meat a lot and ive never heard of "tri-tip" trust me nor has anyone here at the moment lol...

ps venison is crap........ only way its edible is when mixed with beef and pork in sausage imo...
