Attacking cover 2 in the red zone
Lots of folks, including me, will play some cover 2 in the red zone.
How do you attack it from an offensive point of view? Cheers, |

TE post, or a hb screen

Evvvvvvvvveryone plays cover 2 in the redzone for some reason. I guess they are hoping to catch someone throwing to the flat and get a pick 6 down the sideline.
Easy way to beat it, 1) Have a WR 1 on a curl, and have a RB headed to the same side running a flat route. The CB will initially guard the WR but leave him to get the HB/FB in the flat. Once he does throw it to WR1 2) Put WR 1 or WR2 on a slant OUT, motion him towards the line of scrimmage. Hike the ball. The CB will head to his shot flat zone, and the WR will slant in the area behind him. 3) Put the WR1 or WR2 on a playmaker fade (R3+Up). Hike, wait for him to clear and throw high and outside. You may have to manual the catch.

Gibbs posted some good ones. Just to add another wrinkle, pick a play in a two back set that has the TE run a short post. Hot route a HB to a curl. A lot of times the HB curl will pull the LB's to it and leave just enough room to bullet to the TE in the middle.

When I've seen Cover 2 especially the closer you get several hb tosses have worked for me. I personally use this defense near the GL if the opp is real pass happy and with some adjustments (because you have the two deep players to move around and cover areas of the field) it can be stingy but the run will always have an advantage. This is more specific to 10 yards and in.

do a quick pass to ur wr1
find a play that has your wr1 running a deep curl wait just a half a second after the play starts lead him him high to the right(doesnt matter if he's not tall) or you can do the same thing to wr2,making sure he has the same route, just throw it high left this works works all the time for me,cause i now once i get in the redzone my opponment will decide to run some zone and i can can easily notice it by the cb's offset alignment off the wr's this is money, only thing you must watch out for is man coverage, this play is hardly successful running man coverage unless u have a elite wr,bump and run, bump and run will disrupt your timing on throwing the pass (zone or man bnr)...if your opp decides to put his safety closer to your wr's the play can still work but the risk factor is high of him piking it off i remember i got abusive on this play on one of my buddies each time i went to the redzone, over the numerous quick td passes,he found a nifty way to contain it,he would play zone and loosing up the coverage in the red zone he returned a couple of piks to the house so pay attention to details |

If your that close, why not focus on running it in? Overload the zone with extra blockers to one side and run it power style. Or try a HB draw.
If they cheat their safeties up to stop the run, throw a fade to an outside WR. Focus on running it if they don't cheat up. Some sort of Splitbacks formation is good also where either a HB and or FB run circle routes over the middle and put the TE on a streak to clear out the zone. See "Texas" play like BK Arsonist is describing. Hit the back underneath, or TE if the LBs cheat up to stop the backs. Playaction could work also, get those LBs to suck in for the fake and hit the TE over the middle in between and under the safeties. Screens. There's a lot of ways to attack it. No defense is perfect. Just gotta find the weakness.

The Texas play is money against Cover 2. Also, delayed routes going upfield work.

best way to beat a cover 2 if your more than 10 yards out hit the TE on a post route, not enough room generally to hit the corner to receiver. Slants in between the corner and outside linebackers are also money plays against it in the red zone. All about hitting the windows. As stated before though, running the rock is always the best bet in the red zone though

Thanks
Good feedback.
The QP fine by me... but if you bump in cover 2 you can slow it down. But in my book it's ethical and clean (man bnr stops it). |

Hot Route either WR 1 or 2 on a fade. 5 step drop and fire a bullet w/ high pass lead. Click on and undercut for the User.
Hot Route a WR outside slant and motion him close to the OT/TE and hit him on the slant and User catch it near the sidelines. TE angle route. Hot route the TE to a fade and User catch a high bullet as soon as he gets past the LB level. Create a "trips" formation and flood that side with a curl/post/screen combo <- the Hot Route Screen. Mobile QB: scramble and use the R3 feature to put a receiver where you want him. Tons of ways to kill it. Hit me up sometime Bill.
