Eagles Overpay WR Reggie Brown With Contract Extension

Wide receiver Reggie Brown signed his five-year contract extension, one that reportedly provides a bonus of, gulp, $10 million.

wow, the Eagles are losing their minds, 10 career TDs in 24 games and he's getting this kind of money? He's 3rd in the league in DROPPED PASSES this year with 7, only Troy Williamson (9) and T.O. (8 .. haha!) have more.... my god, i'm gonna have an aneuresym.... man i hope that bonus money is based on production and not jsut for making the roster each year.

Well the good thing about this is that they can do this. We always complain about them not going out and spending money on free agents, but this is why they stay under the cap so much. So they can afford to resign their guys.

i don't think Reggie is worth it... i mean since they "can" do this then they may as well have given TO the money he wanted the minute he asked for it and avoided an entire season of b.s. last year.....

There's always that.

But we don't know the details of the contract. Isn't signing bonus pro-rated over the life of the contract for the purposes of the salary cap? Maybe there isn't much money on the back end. $10M for Brown now would do him more good than a potential $6M year 5 years from now, due to the time value of money, and it could help the Eagles by actually keeping their costs down. I mean, what if the contract's 5 years, $15M, with $10M in signing bonus? That's cheap for a good WR, and Brown gets his guaranteed money up front which he can now invest.

If it's like $40M, it's ridiculous, but if it's a lot smaller, it could be a good deal for both parties.

I'm reading that the 10 mil is guaranteed money. > http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15976738.htm

I guess i'm old school, in my mind ya gotta earn that kind of money first - being in the top 3 in dropped passes this year and only 10 career TDs does not warrant that kind of contract to me. The only potential i've seen from him is the potential to drop a lot of 1st downs and TDs. Maybe he'll play better now, who knows, we'll see.

Nevada,

Yeah, all signing bonuses are guaranteed. Just like all salaries are not. But you can see how each party to the negotiations can benefit from a high signing bonus -- Brown gets guaranteed money and the Eagles get a good WR for only $2M + salary per year against their cap number. Presumably a player would accept a smaller overall contract if more of the money was in guaranteed, give-it-to-me-now signing bonus (or at least the player should).

Sad thing is.....

He's already the best and most consistent WR McNabb has had in his career.

and haven't we learned that McNabb might have a say in what goes on around there? methinks Donovan's looking at Reggie and saying "there's my go-to guy the rest of my career."

but the Eagles could get more with that kind of money. oh, if Donovan could team up a young guy like Calvin Johnson next season...watch out.

Who are any of us to say someone is overpaid? To be paid to play a game can be argued to be silly IMO, but I dont go around rating everyones income, thats just the way it is.

Does anybody have any more information on the total contract numbers? We can't really gauge it until we have them.

mone,

I think the idea is that he's overpaid with respect to other wide receivers the Eagles could sign. Not compared to us -- I, for one, think that if anybody's going to get rich from the billions spent on the game we all love, it should be the players.
