Playbook – Houston (it’s found in many others as well)
Formation – Gun Split Close
Our setup…
- Hot route X to a fade.
- Hot route A to a zig.
- Hot route Y to a block-and-release.
Why…
Our X receiver is our user-catch option. If we are in a bind we will look to target him in the seam. Make sure your tallest WR (with solid Catch in Traffic) is positioned here for this formation.
Our A receiver will have inside leverage against man-to-man defenders. We should have a step or two towards the outside. If we see zone, the zig route will grab the attention of zone defenders, freeing up the drag over the middle.
Our Y receiver is placed on a block-and-release route to give us better pass protection.
Your turn…
Leave your setup and tell us why below!

First i’d sub in felix jones at fb.
2nd hot route X on a deep out.
Y on a wheel out the back field that’s it
Drive concept on the right vs zones and slso with the fb coming back over the middle vs zone or man.
Than the out route to X vs man no purples or cov 3 no purples
HB wheel vs cov 3 pressure n some guys like to user the guy man’d up on the hb could create problems n if the defense comes out n throws a deep blue into a puprle to stop ur out route the hb wheel gets open deep just what i’d do….

id put Y on a wheel ,A on a drag ,block the hb, motion B to the right and snap b4 he sets , against man id look for the motion drag , against zone id look for the wheel ,but you have to put A on the drag so he pulls down the flat or purple zone , or the wheel wont be open ,the motion drag creates space against man every time if you do it right ,
