Madden NFL 13 Jumbo Package

The New York Jets have decided on starting RT Austin Howard over veteran Wayne Hunter. They have also talked about utilizing the “Jumbo Package.”

This is very interesting to me.

Why?

Last season, in the Winners Kit, we talked about a revolutionary way that we were deciding on running the ball. This was the setup:

  1. Come out in the Goal Line formation.
  2. Sub in offensive linemen for all our available TEs.
  3. Sub in our best blocking FB/TE at FB.

This created a scenario where we had eight offensive linemen on the field. We would then either run in this formation or we would audible out to the Strong Close formation (to use better runs from that formation with all the beef we had) and run the ball down our opponent’s throat.

Obviously, we took it to the extreme, but last season the New England Patriots utilized this Jumbo Package in select situations with Nate Solder. Not only does this package give you better pass protection but it also will bolster your run blocking.

I personally think that if you want to have a running identity in Madden NFL 13 that this strategy of eight offensive linemen on the field is something that needs to be used.

Will you use eight offensive linemen? Comment below!

  1. i play with the 49ers and i had a tackle starting at TE and had vernon davis start at WR and in obvious passing sets or situations i would sub in delanie walker at te…this very effective and i was a strong close guy…nasty!

i like that a lot – still enough beef on the field to run and pass

  2. I know I will because nothing is more frustrating than knowing what I’m going to do and you still can stop it. That’s the smash mouth in me.

  3. I have found that in prior Maddens that a BLOCKING TE was often more effective run blocking out of the TE position then subbing in your backup OffensiveTackle

may be a little different on the goaline where the defense is in a GAP 8 – Clearly having a BIG OT at TE would be helpful vs an 8 man front! – but against a base defense, I found that a blocking TE was often better at getting downfield to make blocks then a backup OT

Considering what the defense is doing should be analyzed – If Defense is playn a 3-4 – The TE is often double teaming the DE who is playn 4 or 5 technique or he has to get out on an OLB (who could be on the line in 8 or 9 technique or at the second level at the traditional LB startn position) – In this case a smaller BUT QUICKER blocking TE may be more beneficial then a backup OT…

But agasint a 4-3 the TE will have to block a DE who is lined up wider (most likely with help from OT) but it can be tough for the OT to get position to help double team a DE who is playn 9 technique – In this situation (depending on the size of the DE) – subbing in an Offensive Tackle at TE to block at the point of attack would make sense…

In the end – there is no set answer – Best thing to do is to analyze what the defense is doing and TAKE WHAT HE GIVES YOU – and guys that can make these adjustments on the fly have a big advantage in Madden…
