The Return of Brett Favre

Iron man Brett Favre has come out of retirement once again to give it
another run. Now in his 18th season in the NFL, he hopes to lead another team
into the playoffs and ultimately win Super Bowl XXIV. Favre has one of the
highest play action ratings in the game, making the use of play action plays a
must if you plan on using the Vikings.

A play action play we like to run out of the Vikings playbook that showcases
Favre’s play action ability is the I-Form Tight Pair - PA Close Cross.

Playbooks:

• Vikings

This play action play has Favre play faking to Adrian Peterson towards the
right. Once the play fake animation is over, Favre bootlegs towards the left
side. Against the blitz, this play action play is rather effective at keeping
the blitzing defenders off of the Vikings’ new prized possession. Something we
like to do when running this play is to put a faster HB in at the FB position.
Chester Taylor has solid hands and good speed, making him a good choice to fill
in at the FB position.

The defense comes out in the 3-4 Normal—Pinch. This Cover 0 defense sends 6
pass rushers after the QB.

The TE2 is sent in auto motion to the left side. Once set, the TE2 will look
to block one of the blitzing defenders.

In the screen shot, we show Favre faking the handoff to AP.

After the play fake occurs, Favre will boot towards to left side. At this
point look for the FB in the left flat. Watch to see how close the man covering
him gets. If the FB has a few yards separation between him and the defender
covering him, make the throw. If not, look for another open receiver.

The next two reads are TE1 and WR1. TE2 runs a crossing route from right to
left, while WR1 runs a crossing route from left to right. WR1’s crossing route
has him doing a double move, which often allows him to gain extra separation
from the defender covering him.

We spot WR1 open as he comes across the middle of the field. We throw him
one of Favre’s signature fastballs.

The catch is made and we head into the end zone for six points.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of what your thoughts are on Favre as far as coming out of
retirement for the 3rd time, the bottom line is he potentially makes the
