Mailbag Monday – Post Your Questions for TWIM #75!

Madden NFL is going strong, and this week we’re bringing you all new tips and tricks in this week’s episode of “This Week in Madden”!

For a LIMITED TIME, we have another great deal for today’s Mailbag Monday. Today only, you can get 40% off any ONE Madden NFL 13 Official Player’s eGuide. Just use promo code 40OFFONE at checkout!

During last week’s TWIM, we discussed man vs. zone coverage and the secret to the best run in Madden NFL 13. ZFarls and SGibs both played intense games in the Game of the Week. Don’t worry – if you missed all the action you can catch a full recording here.

Our third Virgin Gaming–sponsored Game of the Week Qualifier was a complete success, and spots filled up within minutes of opening. A big congratulations to last week’s winners, Preeti “king_nfl” Moore and Brian “Sbs1515″ Shannon, who beat out several other competitors for a chance to play SGibs or ZFarls on this week’s Game of the Week. Not only will they be competing in this week’s game (where they can win their choice of digital gift card from GameStop.com or NFLShop.com), but they’ve already won the Tournament Winner’s Kit and secured a spot in the MaddenTips TWIM Championship at the end of the season.

If you didn’t get a chance to enter last week, don’t worry; Virgin Gaming is hosting the Game of the Week Qualifiers all season long, so register as soon as possible on VirginGaming.com, and then check back on Friday 12PT/3ET to register for the Qualifiers tournaments as well. (Game of the Week Qualifier tournaments are held on Saturday 12PT/3ET). Last week’s brackets filled up fast, so don’t be left in the backfield while everyone else is moving the chains.

On this week’s episode of TWIM, we’ll be taking callers for our Lightning Round, where you can call in and win free eGuides. We’ll also discuss:

  • The Death of the Deep Ball and How to Revive It
  • Great Debate – Feature Halfback or By Committee?
  • Game Management 101 – How to Win Against Superior Opponents

ZFarls attempts to avenge one of his few losses this season LIVE on the GOTW against “Chief.” Can he lock up J. Charles with his new run defense and get revenge? Will SGibs share the secrets he used to take down this opponent earlier this year? Plus we have a bonus tip from the dev team on pressing one of the hottest formations in Madden NFL 13!

Remember, be sure to tune in this Wednesday at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET on www.MaddenTips.com/TWIM! To catch up on previous episodes of TWIM, click here. Also, check out the Virgin Tip of the week here.

And, of course, we need your questions for this week’s Mailbag. Leave your question question in the “Comments” section, and we’ll choose some of the best to answer live on the show.

  1. When making a custom playbook, If you only have around a 100 plays that you have scouted and want to put in it,,,, WOULD YOU (A) put only them 100 plays in the playbook. (B) Fill the playbook to normal size with unscouted plays and sets. (C) making a custom playbook is not a good idea.

  2. Im a online Madden player that has NOT played a online game yet this year. I’v been in the lab getting my custom playbook and schemes down perfect. I’m worried that the madden online community has a leg up on me since i have not play any games yet. My question being, is it a good idea to get your scheme down before playing or should you be playing games while your still putting your scheme and playbook together?

  3. This is Rob Jones.. Sgibs gave me a scheme for madden 09.. many years ago and I have been a follower for years… Here is my question. Why can’t we use custom playbooks in this year online virgin tournaments? Did something go wrong? I have not even set up a custom playbook due to this reason.

  4. I got the starters bundle and so far so good, Thanks.

I am having trouble reading defenses both before and after the snap. I make a pre-snap read at what it could be, but after the snap I often times find myself confused and end up throwing a bad ball. what should I be looking for? Open windows? Safties? LB drops? Help. How do you guys do it?

Mike, check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f_Or98_luQ Make a hypothesis pre snap, and then when you snap it look for your keys to see if it is true.

  5. Punting question??? how do you coffin corner punt. and where and when should you try. how do you get you special team punt team to make a play to stop the ball from going into the endzone for a touchback from a bounce or still in the air

  6. How do you beat the “ball hawking” technology….there is not very many linebackers that can cover Hester deep, but yet they jump 15 ft in the air 20 yards shy of where the ball is being thrown and intercept it!

  7. Are there any effective man or zone blitzes in the 3-4 normal or 3-4 Solid Formations

Or the 3 – 4 over or even

  8. I am having a hard time coming up with a playbook that works well for me. I like to pound the rock and throw short quick routes with an occasional deep route. I have tried your schemes on your e-guides but they don’t fit my style and I struggle with them. Any tips?

  9. How do you stop strong tosses or sweeps to the outside? That’s 1 of the few things I struggle with in this years game. would lock that fir?

    mrlyte Reply:

I meant what would lock that down this year?

Also, the stretch play out of power formations is getting very popular as well. Pretty against the better running backs.

  10. 3-4 run stoppers, corners tend to retreat on the run this year, is there any way to prevent this, its hard to properly set the edge when you defender basically runs away from the play.

  11. Hey, I haven’t had any trouble online until I recently vs’d this one kid and he had Finely and Jennings playing TE and had Nelson and Driver at WR. He would streak both TE’s and one receiver would curl and the other would wheel. When I would go into max coverage he would scramble, but when I brought some pressure he would either precision pass to the TE’s or Hit one of his WR’s. No matter what I tried he somehow hit the pass. Luckily I won the shootout, but I struggled to stop his offense. So, I would like to know how to stop this.

  12. I have a problem with catching in this game, mostly on defense. I’m not talking about some spectacular user catch, just literally getting the receiver/defender to activate any catch animation. When I try to catch the ball, the person will either stop moving or not put their hands up. I’ve tried holding the Y button and tapping it. I have the same problem with swatting. Is there something that I am doing wrong? For example, I found out that I can’t hold the sprint button while trying to strafe or it won’t work. Is something similar going on with the catch button?

    [Reply]

    ZFaris Reply:

John, Simply hold down Y as soon as you click on and ballhawk will do the work and get the best catch for you!

  14. I purchased the Tournament guide but don’t use either playbook (and don’t want to change playbooks just to use the guide – long story involving connected careers). How can I benefit from the information. Using ATL D & Texans O.

    [Reply]

    ZFaris Reply:

Texans O should still utilize many of the concepts and plays. Also, look for specific motions and hot routes you can emulate. Texans is a very strong PB so there should be plenty to use there.

  15. Does anybody know if EA considers the lack of pressing on the PS3 a problem that should be fixed? Or is this just a quirk we have to live with this year? If so, how do you use cover 1/cover 0 blitzes?

    [Reply]

  16. On a standard 4-man rush, is there any way to get your CPU defensive tackle to have a chance at getting to the quarterback? Even dominant pass rushing DTs like Geno Atkins don’t really get to the quarterback.

    [Reply]

  17. Does EA Plan to patch or address the fact that on the Playstation Platform you cannot press recievers on the left side of the field. It makes playing man or blitzing that much less effective knowing the recievers on the left have free release and most likely will be quick pass options or bailouts when playing man to man press coverage blitzing or not.

  19. Even if you buy your tournament ebooks…. at the end of the day should you make your own scheme duh to the fact that people are gonna know your scheme when you play in elite tournaments?

  20. I’m playing good d using your eguide and only allowing 60 yards rushing a game but my problem is stoping passes and curl routes in the slot positions in the middle of the field how do you defend this?

    [Reply]

    ZFaris Reply:

Must switch to some cover 2 sink every now and then from the two man under and hope to catch them. Otherwise try and drop a d-lineman underneath in a hook zone. That is why I don’ like curls over the middle, too much traffic.

  22. What route combinations should I use to attack the MIDDLE of the field against cover 2 and cover 3, as well as 2 man under (crossing routes aren’t as effective against man this year)
