Gun Empty Trips Open Double Square In Double Corner
Concept
The Gun Empty Trips Open Double Square In Double Corner is a very effective passing concept to run against zone coverage. The idea behind this concept is to have the outside receivers running 10 yard square in routes to draw the defender covering them in zone coverage. By the defender going inside, it allows the receivers running the corner routes to gain space.
Progression Reads
WR3 (Y) - Corner
WR4 (LB) - Corner
WR2 (X) - Square In
WR1 (B) - Square In
WR5 (A) - Drag

How the Concept Works on the Field
The play we use for this concept is the Gun Empty Trips Open Smash. This play gives us a nice high/low isolation. If the receivers running curls are covered, look for the receivers running corner routes.
The defensive coverage called is Cover 3.
The way we run this concept is to hot route both outside receivers on square in routes. They also need to be smart routed to extend their pass routes.
Next, we hot route the WR5 on a drag route.
Look immediately to the WR3 and WR4 while they are running straight down the field. There is a chance they may be open for a quick pass.
Notice the RCB covering the WR2.
Once the WR2 breaks to the inside, the RCB goes inside with him slightly.
By the time the RCB sees that the WR3 is breaking to the corner, he is a few steps behind.
We throw a hard bullet pass and lead WR3 to the outside.
We make the catch 17 yards down the field.
Key Points
- Watch to see if a defender drops in a buzz zone (purple). If one does, the corner route won't be open.
- Against some zone defenders, there may a small window to throw to the receivers running square ins.
- Against man coverage, the corner routes and square in routes may be open. Watch for a defender playing robber if throwing to the receivers running square ins. The receivers running corner routes are the better options against man coverage.
- The WR5 is the checkdown receiver. If no receiver is open deep, look to throw to him.
